When do you meet?

Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and on training weekends

When can I join?

If you are aged between 12 and 18 you can join the Sea Cadets, they meet both Wednesday and Friday nights.
If you are age between 10 and 12 you can join the Junior section which meet on a Friday evening.

How much does it cost?

£1 per training night. Payment is collected each training evening (*correct at 02/2003)

Can I leave the unit when I want?

Yes, although most Cadets normally stay once they have joined.

How long can I stay in the Unit?

You can stay in the unit up until your 18th birthday unless you have reached the rate of Cadet Petty Officer, when you may be invited to remain in the unit as a member of staff.

Can parents or guardians visit the unit?

Parents and guardians are very welcome to come and see how their cadets are getting on.

Can parents or guardians get involved?

There is a Parents and Supporter's Committee which raises funds for the Unit throughout the year. There is never enough money or helpers, so if you would like to help you can contact the Parents and Supporters Committee chairperson through the unit.

Who runs the unit?

The uniformed and civilian staff under the command of the Officer in Charge are responsible for the running of the unit's daily tasks. These tasks include teaching of course work, boating and all other aspects of Sea Cadets, as well as discipline. There is also a management committee under a Chairperson, which oversees the maintenance of the building, transport and fund raising for the unit.

What happens outside the unit?

There are a number of varied events outside the unit. These range from visits to Royal Navy ships to Camps in the summer.

Do I have to be able to swim?

No. Hopefully you will learn to swim through the cadets.

If I wanted to join the Royal Navy or Royal Marines when I am older will the Sea Cadets help?

Although the Sea Cadets will not guarantee entry to the Royal navy or the Royal marines, they will request a report from the Officer in Charge to be sent to the Career Officer on an application to them. Good attendance and joining in activities at the Sea Cadets may well prove to be an advantage when applying to the RN/RM.
